Karangahape Road embodies the dynamic and rich history of this country. Beginning from the paths paved by the Hape legend, Karangahape Road has maintained its place even after the colonisation as one of the vibrant and dynamic locations in Auckland. Over the course of the last 150 years, this road has stored people’s lives, the torment and hopes they had for their future.
Our focus for this project is on the architectural history of the chosen buildings on Karangahape road and the human activities associated with the building and the surrounding location. We have decided on a particular intersection of where Karangahape Road meets Pitt Street and Mercury Lane. Focusing on buildings on intersection allows us to explore the movement of people as well as opportunities to research iconic historical buildings and examine the interactive effect among intersection, public spaces, human activity and buildings.
